Camp
H.E.R.O.
(Helping Each other Remove
Obstacles)

Camp H.E.R.O. is a place where people of every ability level and
age can have fun and enjoy the lazy days of summer and their parents
or guardians can feel confident all their needs are being addressed.
Camp
H.E.R.O. began in 1994 with 14 campers; in 2004, fifty-eight campers
enjoyed a great camping experience. Camp has become a very popular
activity among the people we serve. This was the first year we filled
the entire sleeping capacity of the camp!
Camp H.E.R.O. offers boating,
fishing, hiking, swimming, crafts and many more individualized activities.
These activities are frequently denied to someone with special needs
because of the cost involved to make it a safe experience.
Camp H.E.R.O. is held at
Camp Courage located on the shores of Lake George near Park Rapids,
Minnesota and is held in August. Camp Courage is the only accessible
camp in our area. Providing a safe camping experience for people
with accessibility issues, medical fragility or behavioral needs
is an expensive endeavor. Donations allow us to off set the costs
so people of all income levels can enjoy camp.
Camp
H.E.R.O. is planned by Jody
Hudson. Jody have been co-directing camp since 1999. She tries
to design a stress free environment
just fun in the sun. No
strict schedules
the name of the game is flexibility. During
camp orientation you will hear her tell the campers, This
is your vacation. You have two days to do whatever you want. Enjoy
yourself. There are lots of activities scheduled for people
to attend, they can attend as many or as few as they choose. If
your idea of a vacation is kicking back and relaxing, that is ok.
Camp is designed to offer something for everyone. CCRIs RN,
Carolyn Cossette, also attends camp to ensure that it is a safe
and healthy experience for everyone. Camp H.E.R.O. is only offered
to individuals served by CCRI. Learn
