From Intern to Head of Operations: Haley’s Success Story
Our student internships provide an outstanding opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience you need to become a successful professional in today’s workforce.
We had a chance to chat with Haley Johnson, one of the first interns in our Development and Communication Department back in the spring of 2014.
Where did you go to school and what was your major?
I graduated from North Dakota State University (NDSU) with a degree in Public Relations and Strategic Communication.
What parts of your CCRI internship were most valuable?
This was the first time I had ever worked in a more of a professional/office environment. It was interesting to see the dynamics of an office and how the team delegated tasks for event planning.
Being able to intern for a company that I was already passionate about and had a personal connection to was very fulfilling. Having the prior experience as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) helped me have a deeper understanding of the company and clients.
Having a role in event planning for the Polar Plunge was awesome. It was so great to see an idea come to fruition—even if it was freezing cold!
I also think having a direct mentor or two to report to throughout the internship was important.
Where are you now or where have you been since graduating?
After my internship with CCRI I had three other internships in various industries. After graduating from NDSU, I moved to New Zealand to work for a small public relations agency. I then worked with startups in Bali for a few months and now reside in Australia where I run a startup education company.
